Senior Legislative Liaison Tim Richardson and LegislativeLiaison Matt Brown participated in a stakeholders conferencecall regarding S. 921, the “Jamie Zapata and Victor AvilaFederal Law Enforcement Officers Protection Act,” whichincluded law enforcement groups and officials from the U.S.Departments of State and Homeland Security. THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONThe Senate Committee on Appropriations' Subcommittee onCommerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies held ahearing entitled: "A Review of the President’s Fiscal Year 2022Funding Request for the U.S. Department of Justice." U.S.Attorney General Merrick B. Garland testified at the hearing.The Senate Committee on the Judiciary considered andfavorably reported S. 1014, the "First Step Implementation Act,"on a 13-9 vote. The legislation will now go to the Senate floorfor a full vote. The May 7 ransomware cyberattack on Colonial Pipeline, an oilpipeline system that carries gasoline and jet fuel mainly to theSoutheastern United States, resulted in critical infrastructure beingtaken out of operation. On May 8, with the assistance of the FBI,Colonial Pipeline paid the requested ransom (75 bitcoin or $4.4million) within several hours after the attack.On Monday, U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco announcedthat the DOJ had successfully seized the millions of dollars (63.7bitcoins) of ransom money that Colonial Pipeline paid to the cybercriminal group DarkSide following last month's ransomware attack.THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONThe Senate Committee on Homeland Security and GovernmentalAffairs held a hearing entitled: "Threats to Critical Infrastructure:Examining the Colonial Pipeline Cyber Attack."
