THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVESH.R. 2992, the "Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic StressDisorder (PTSD) Law Enforcement Training Act," would require theBureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to establish crisis interventiontraining tools for first responders to address individuals with TBI,acquired brain injuries, and PTSD; andH.R. 6943, the "Public Safety Officer Support Act," would amend theOmnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to authorize publicsafety officer death benefits to officers suffering from post-traumaticstress disorder, acute stress disorder, and other related disorders.The House passed two FOP-supported bills with overwhelming bipartisansupport. Both of these bills will now be sent to the Senate for a final vote.These two bills include:The House Committee on Homeland Security's Subcommittee on BorderSecurity, Facilitation, and Operations held a hearing entitled "ExaminingDHS's Efforts to Combat the Opioid Epidemic."The House Committee on Appropriations' Subcommittee on HomelandSecurity held a hearing entitled "Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Request for the U.S.Immigration and Customs Enforcement." Providing testimony at this hearingwas Acting Director Tae D. Johnson of the U.S. Immigration and CustomsEnforcement.

THE UNITED STATES SENATES. 2151, the “Strong Communities Act,” which would help build on thecommunity-policing model by establishing a grant program for local lawenforcement agencies to assist in recruiting officers in their owncommunity;S. 3860, the “Invest to Protect Act,” which would establish a grantprogram, administered by the Community Oriented Policing Services(COPS) Office within the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), that would beused for the training of officers from police departments andmunicipalities that employ less than 200 law enforcement officers;S. 4003, the “Law Enforcement De-escalation Training Act,” which wouldprovide $70 million in annual grant funding from the Edward ByrneMemorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne-JAG) to State and local lawenforcement agencies to train officers in de-escalation tactics andalternatives to the use of force; andS. 4007, the “Fighting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Act,” which woulddirect the U.S. Department of Justice to develop a state-of-the-arttreatment program for public safety officers experiencing acute stressdisorder or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).The Senate Committee on Judiciary held a markup for numerous FOP-supported bills. We areseeking current or retired law enforcement officers including corrections, detention,or military police officers who have not been separated or retired for more than fiveyears prior to contracting with the USMS.The DSO position is a contracted position. DSOs are required to assist in thetransportation, handling, and processing of federal prisoners. DSOs will be expectedto produce prisoners in court, provide security, and assist with general operations.Accordingly, interested parties should be:DSOs may be exposed to extreme climatic conditions for prolonged periods of time.DSOs must have good vision and hearing and be capable of sitting, walking, running,or driving for long periods of time. DSO pay is determined based on the location inwhich services are provided; overtime is not available. DSOs are contracted on an adhoc basis and will not be expected to work more than 40 hours per week. Mostdistricts will work to accommodate the DSO’s schedule.
