THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVESThe House Committee on Oversight and Reform held a hearing entitled "TheUrgent Need to Address the Gun Violence Epidemic." Providing testimony atthis double panel hearing were numerous survivors of recent shootings The House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack held its first publichearing to present the initial summary of the committee's findings on theattack. Providing testimony at the hearing was U.S. Capitol Police OfficerCaroline Edwards, who was injured by rioters. Raise the lawful age to purchase a “semiautomatic centerfire rifle” from18 to 21;Ban high-capacity magazines;Increase penalties for gun trafficking and straw purchases;Create new criminal penalties for failure to safely store firearms;Outlaw bump stocks; andOutlaw "ghost guns."The House passed H.R. 7910, the "Protecting Our Kids Act" on a 223-204vote. This legislation would:The bill will now be transmitted to the Senate for a vote. At this time, it isunlikely that the bill will be able to overcome the required 60 vote threshold.
THE UNITED STATES SENATEThe Senate Committee on Judiciary held a hearing entitled "Examining the‘Metastasizing’ Domestic Terrorism Threat After the Buffalo Attack." Thishearing examined the increase in domestic terrorism attacks and the recentmass shooting that occurred in Buffalo, New York. Additionally, the paneldiscussed Federal efforts that would be potentially effective in counteringthis spike.The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs helda hearing entitled "Domestic Extremism in America: Examining WhiteSupremacist Violence in the Wake of Recent Attacks." The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs helda hearing entitled "Rising Threats: Ransomware Attacks and RansomPayments Enabled by Cryptocurrency." This hearing examined the use ofcryptocurrencies in illicit activities, in particular, the use of this asset class inransom attempts. Efforts taken by law enforcement agencies were alsodiscussed. The Senate Committee on Judiciary held a meeting to consider numerousnominations for open positions within the United States SentencingCommission (USSC). The Senate Committee on Judiciary also held anexecutive business meeting to consider several judicial nominees.
