Schumer (D-NY), Senate MinorityLeader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House Minority Leader Hakeem S. Jeffries (D-NY) met at the White House to discuss the debt ceiling, which could be breached asearly as 1 June. While no substantive progress was made, the two sides willconvene again at a later date.Alejandro N. Mayorkas, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,visited the southern border in advance of the lifting of the Title 42 public healthorder. Later in the week, he gave a briefing outlining the Department's planning andoperations ahead of the order's lifting, followed by a media availability. With theexpiration of the order on 11 May, coinciding with the conclusion of the COVID-19public health emergency, it is expected that the flow of migrants to the Southernborder will increase.THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE WHITE HOUSE

The bill, which addresses issues regarding immigration and border security,including imposing limits on asylum eligibility, was transmitted to the Senate forfurther action.THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVESThe House Committee on the Judiciary passed H.R. 3091, the “Federal LawEnforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act.” This FOP-supported bill, whichwould allow Federal law enforcement officers to purchase retired service weapons,now awaits action by the full House.The House Committee on the Judiciary passed H. Res. 363. The resolution, whichexpresses support for recognizing National Police Week, now awaits action by the fullHouse.The House Committee on the Judiciary passed H. Con. Res. 40. The resolution, whichexpresses support for local law enforcement officers and condemns efforts to defundor dismantle local law enforcement agencies, now awaits action by the full House.The House Committee on the Judiciary passed H.R. 2494, the “Police Act.“ The bill,which would make assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense for anillegal alien, now awaits action by the full House.The House considered and passed H.R. 1734, the “TRANQ Research Act,” byunanimous consent. The bill, which requires the National Institute of Standards andTechnology (NIST) to support research and other activities related to identifyingxylazine (a compound used in veterinary medicine as a nonopioid tranquilizer), novelsynthetic opioids, and other emerging substances of concern, was transmitted to theSenate for further action.
