Speaker Kevin O. McCarthy (R-CA) wasremoved from his position last week, following a contentious showdown instigatedby a small faction of staunchly ideological Members. House Majority Leader SteveJ. Scalise (R-LA) withdrew from the race for Speaker. This decision placesRepresentative Jim D. Jordan (R-OH) and J. Austin Scott (R-GA) have both declaredthey are running for the Speaker’s gavel but candidate seems to have enoughsupport in the Republican conference to win a floor vote.The House Committee on the Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Crime and FederalGovernment Surveillance held a hearing, entitled: “Victims of Violent Crime in theDistrict of Columbia.” The hearing examined the rise of violent crime in Democrat-run Washington, D.C., and the lack of prosecutions and prosecutorial accountability.Among those testifying at the hearing was Greg Pemberton, a current MetropolitanPolice Department Detective and Chairman of the D.C.
