Senior Legislative Liaison Tim Richardson met with Representative Vernon G.Buchanan’s (R-FL) staff from the Health Subcommittee from the Committee onWays and Means to discuss ideas to improve resources for officer wellnessprograms.Senior Legislative Liaison Tim Richardson met with staff in the office ofRepresentative Yadira D. Caraveo (D-CO) to discuss the FOP’s priorities, includingH.R. 743, the “Protect and Serve Act,” as well as draft legislation to address the risein carjackings around the country.

Schumer (D-NY), Mark R. Warner (D-VA), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)to discuss our joint efforts to get relief from current limitations on deductions forState and local taxes (SALT) as part of any tax package that Congress considersthis year.Senior Legislative Liaison Tim Richardson and Legislative Liaison Asa Render metwith Senator Timothy E. The Second Session of the 118th Congress has begun and FOP priorities, including the“Social Security Fairness Act,” are poised for action. For the first time, the nation’s oldest and largest organization of law enforcement officers will be joining forceswith the nation’s oldest and largest union of professional firefighters—the International Association of FireFighters (IAFF). Rank-and-file law enforcement officers and firefighters will come together in our Nation’s capital to highlight theimportant issues facing our public safety organizations. We will be talking about the challenges and the needs ofour memberships including recognizing the right of public safety officers to collectively bargain, protecting dueprocess for officers and firefighters, and repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and GovernmentPension Offset (GPO)!On Tuesday, 5 March from 11am-12pm the FOP-IAFF will hold a rally on the Capitol grounds to call on Congressfor immediate action on H.R. 82/S. 597, the “Social Security Fairness Act,” to repeal the WEP and GPO.Our future success and our legislative agenda depend on our ability to motivate and mobilize our grassroots tomake sure our message gets through—which will get increasingly more difficult as we get closer and closer to theelection. Participation in this event is just a part—but an important part—of the FOP’s advocacy strategy. We needour members to build, strengthen, and sustain their relationships with their Senators and Representatives. The bill, which would expand the child taxcredit for families with children under 17 and extend a number of tax cuts forbusinesses, was transmitted to the Senate for further action.The House considered and passed H.R. 5585, the “Agent Raul Gonzalez OfficerSafety Act”, on a 271-154 vote. This bill, which would establish new Federalcriminal offenses for fleeing from law enforcement officers and make those foundguilty ineligible for immigration relief, was transmitted to the Senate for furtheraction.THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVESThe House Committee on Rules considered and adopted a rule for theconsideration of H.R. 7160, the “SALT Marriage Penalty Elimination Act,” on theHouse floor. The bill, which may be voted on next week, would temporarily boostthe cap on State and local tax (SALT) deductions for married couples from $10,000to $20,000 for the 2023 tax year.
