What is your background growing up I grew up in northern Baltimore county and l attended an all boys Jesuit middle and high school and played football and baseball I went to Elon University in North Carolina and chose business as a major because I knew that would provide me with the best job opportunities What was your first job Chris Naylor COO Direct Mortgage Loans I was 16 and had a driver s license so it worked out that I would give my sister rides to her horseback riding lessons and I got paid to shovel out the stalls I did that for two summers before college and then the summer after freshmen year I got my first real paycheck at Baltimore Tool I was given one job I was to assemble a room full of chisels package them up and ship them off to home depot and it was to be completed by the end of the Summer I finished the job in early July so I had put myself out of work At that point I decided to start my own business detailing cars and I called it the Detail Dude I was 19 years old and that job pretty much paid me my beer money What drew you to the mortgage industry During the Summer before senior year my brother got into the mortgage business I became friendly with the guys he was working with and they gave me a Summer internship I was tasked with answering the phone and ended up closing some loans It s crazy to think now a Summer Intern closing mortgages but at that time you didn t need a license to sell mortgages Those core guys left that company to start DML and I was one of the original six people hired when they opened their doors in 2008 What is your favorite thing about working at DML I know every company claims to have a cool culture but those first core dozen employees are still here at DML The leadership team has invested greatly into creating a positive culture This means that we are very selective about who we bring on We use behavioral assessments to gauge not only personality at home but how that will translate into their job role and that varies greatly by person We take a lot of time to evaluate the testing and go through the results page bypage with potential candidates We know who they are right out the gate and what motivates them and that allows us to adjust our management style because we want happy focused successful long term employees If you had to choose one album one movie and one meal for the rest of your life what would they be Album The Eagles Greatest Hits Meal Maryland steamed crabs Movie Casino Pineapple on pizza yes or no Yes I am a non traditional pizza guy so I m good with any weird combo but pineapple on pizza is a yes
