Rutherford (R-FL) about H.R. 743, the “Protect and Server Act.”Representative Rutherford is the sponsor of the bill.Executive Director Jim Pasco had numerous conversations with Hugh T. Clements,Jr., Director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), aboutthe bill reauthorizing the COPS Office.

We’re also joinedby Matt Hagen, who Chairs the Memorial Committee. Matt and the MemorialCommittee are responsible for the planning, setup and execution of the NationalPeace Officers' Memorial Service in Washington D.C.

@GLFOP @FOPNATIONALNATIONAL FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICEThe House Committee on the Judiciary held a mark-up on two top priorities for theFOP, H.R. 354, the “LEOSA Reform Act,” and H.R. 743, the “Protect and Serve Act.” The Committee considered and favorably reported H.R. 354 without amendment ona 15-9 vote. Staff on the committee informed the FOP that the bill would beconsidered on the House floor next week, and House leadership staff confirmedthis. The Committee postponed consideration of H.R. 743.THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVESThe House voted 359-43 to table a motion to declare the office of Speaker of theHouse vacant. If the motion had passed, the House would have voted whether ornot to expel Representative J. Michael Johnson as Speaker.The House passed H.R. 8289, a temporary extension for the Airport and AirwayTrust Fund, on a 385-24 vote. The House Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing entitled “The Biden BorderCrisis: Arizona Perspectives”, which included testimony from Chris Clem, a retiredChief Border Patrol agent, and Jacob Kartchner, a retired Cochise County Sheriff’sDeputy.

@GLFOP @FOPNATIONALNATIONAL FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICETHIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE UNITED STATES SENATEThe Senate passed H.R. 3935, the “Federal Aviation AdministrationReauthorization Act,” which funds the Federal Aviation Administration throughFiscal Year 2028, on an 88-4 vote. The Senate also passed H.R. 8289, which is aone-week reauthorization in order to give the House additional time to pass the bill.Included in the legislation was a modified version of S. Amdt. 1949, anamendment supported by the FOP,which requires the FAA to implement certainGovernment Accountability Office recommendations that would help deter andcapture drug smugglers who move their illicit products by air. The bill now awaitsaction in the House.The Senate Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing titled “Dream Deferred: TheUrgent Need to Protect Immigrant Youth,” which included testimony from MitchellSoto-Rodriguez, a police officer with the Blue Island Police Department, as well asmultiple other immigration experts.
