Thousands of officers, as well as the surviving familymembers and friends of slain officers, traveled from across the country to thenation’s capital to attend the National FOP’s 43rd Annual National Peace Officers’Memorial Service, at which President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., delivered the KeynoteAddress. At this year's Memorial Service, we honored 222 law enforcement officerswho lost their lives in the line of duty. Executive Director Jim Pasco and staff fromthe National Legislative Office also attended the Memorial Service.LEGISLATIVE NEWS & ACTIVITYNational President Patrick Yoes held a meeting with Speaker J. Michael Johnsonand Representative Steven J. Scalise on police week priorities. National President Patrick Yoes attended a prayer vigil hosted by Speaker J.Michael Johnson honoring fallen law enforcement officers. Garland, Deputy Assistant U.S. Attorney General LisaO. Monaco, and other stakeholder groups at the Attorney General’s quarterlymeeting at the U.S. Department of Justice. The issues of violent crime and theproposed rescheduling of marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act werediscussed. Executive Director Jim Pasco was in regular contact with Erika Dinkel-Smith,Special Assistant to the President for Political Affairs, regarding the White House’sparticipation in the National Peace Officers Memorial Service.National President Patrick Yoes worked from the Steve Young Law EnforcementLegislative Advocacy Center in Washington, D.C.

On this episode of the Blue View, National President Patrick Yoes sits down withGlenda Lehmann, President of the National FOP Auxiliary Board. We’re also joinedby Matt Hagen, who chairs the Memorial Committee. Matt and the MemorialCommittee are responsible for the planning, setup and execution of the NationalPeace Officers' Memorial Service in Washington, D.C.

The bill, which is a priority of the FOP, was transmitted to the Senate forfurther action.The House considered and passed H.R. 7581, the “Improving Law EnforcementOfficer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act,” on a 365-55 vote. The bill, whichthe FOP supports, was transmitted to the Senate for further action.The House passed S.546, the “Recruit and Retain Act,” on a 370-18 vote. The bill,which the FOP supports, would expand the scope of the Hiring Programadministered by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) toallow funds to be used to reduce application fees and other similar costs for jobapplicants. The bill is now being transmitted to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. whois expected to sign it into law.The House considered and passed H. Res. 1213, condemning violence against lawenforcement officers and calling for greater resources for officers and thecommunities they serve. The resolution, which the FOP worked with RepresentativePeter A. Stauber (R-MN) to develop, was approved by a 337-61 vote. The resolutionwas transmitted to the Senate for further action.The House considered and passed H.R. 3935, the “Securing Growth and RobustLeadership in American Aviation Act,” on a 387-26 vote. Included in the legislationwas S. Amdt. 1949, which requires the FAA to implement certain GovernmentAccountability Office recommendations that would help deter and capture drugsmugglers who move their illicit products by air. The bill was transmitted to JosephR. Biden, Jr., who signed it into law.

@GLFOP @FOPNATIONALNATIONAL FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICETHIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVESThe House considered and passed H.R. 7343, the Detain and Deport Illegal AliensWho Assault Cops Act,” and H.R. 7530, the “DC CRIMES Act.”The House Homeland Security Committee held a hearing entitled “Standing Strongon the Thin Blue Line: How Congress Can Support State and Local LawEnforcement,” which featured testimony from Gregory Mays, Deputy Commissionerof Homeland Security, as well as multiple law enforcement officers.Speaker J. Michael Johnson holds a prayer vigil for fallen officers, attended by National President Patrick Yoes.

@GLFOP @FOPNATIONALNATIONAL FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICETHIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE UNITED STATES SENATEThe Senate Committee on the Judiciary held a mark-up on S. 930, the “HonoringOur Fallen Heroes Act,” S. 3335, the “Retired Federal Law Enforcement OfficersContinuing Service Act,” and S. 4235, the “Reauthorizing Support and Treatment forOfficers in Crisis (STOIC) Act.” The “Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act” wouldcategorize certain duty-related cancer fatalities as a line of duty death under thePublic Safety Officers’ Benefits program. The bill was favorably reported on arecorded 21-0 vote, with all Members of the Judiciary Committee joining the bill ascosponsors. Both S. 3335, which establishes a grant program to allow for thehiring of retired law enforcement officers to train and perform civilian lawenforcement duties, and S. 4235, which reauthorizes the STOIC Act, were favorablyreported by a unanimous voice vote. The FOP strongly supports all three bills,which now go to the Senate floor for further consideration.
