Senator Tillis has been a championfor local, State, and Federal law enforcement and has been a national leader inadvancing legislation to ensure they have the tools, resources, and support theyneed to protect the public and stay safe while in the line of duty.He has partnered with the FOP on several bills important to law enforcement;everything from Cybercrime metrics, reauthorization of the COPS Hiring Program,Scenario-Based Training, and legislation, initially developed by the FOP, onincreasing the availability of trauma kits. Notably, he was a key leader of twolegislative efforts of critical importance to law enforcement—the Public SafetyOfficer Support Act (PSOSA) and the Protect and Serve Act.

@GLFOP @FOPNATIONALNATIONAL FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICEThe House considered and passed the first of two “mini-bus” bills providing FY2024funding for Military Construction and the U.S. Departments of Agriculture,Commerce, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, andTransportation.The Justice Department appropriations were reduced by $1 billion in this fiscal yearto a total of $37.5 billion. The allocation for the Edward Byrne Memorial JusticeAssistance Grant (Byrne-JAG) program was increased to a total of $924 million andalso included a small increase for the programs administered by the Office ofCommunity Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to a total of $664.5 million. TheCOPS hiring program received $256 million. The bill also included an 6% cut to the budget to the Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI), a reduction of $654 million from last year’s appropriation. The bill alsoreduced the funding for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives(ATF) by $100 million. State and local law enforcement will be impacted as theseagencies often partner with State and local agencies to combat the opioid epidemic,gang violence, and other crimes that cross jurisdictional boundaries. The legislation now goes to the Senate which is expected to pass the legislationbefore the expiration of the existing continuing resolution.The House Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and FederalGovernment Surveillance held a hearing entitled, “A Voice for the Voiceless - CSAMIdentification.” This hearing examined joint efforts among Federal, State,international entities, and non-government partners that are essential for theidentification and rescue of Child Sex Abuse Materials (CSAM) victims.THIS WEEK IN WASHINGTONTHE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
