Warner (D-VA) regarding the Senatecompanion to H.R. 6436, whichwould repeal the direct paymentrequirement in the Healthcare Enhancement for Local Public Safety(HELPS) Retirees Act. Under current law, eligible retired publicsafety officers may use up to $3,000 per year from their qualifiedgovernment retirement plan, on a pre-tax basis, to pay for healthinsurance or long-term care insurance premiums. In order for theseofficers to get the pre-tax benefit, the money must be paid directlyfrom their pension fund to a health or long-term care insurancecompany.
