The National Fraternal Order of Police regrets to report that as of 9:00am
eastern on 3 October, there have been 290 officers shot in the line of duty
so far in 2023 (+21% from 2021 YTD; +22% from 2020 YTD). Of those
officers shot, 37 of them were killed by gunfire (-16% from 2021 YTD;
+/-0% from 2020 YTD).
There have been 92 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement officers this
year. These ambush-style attacks have resulted in 109 officers shot, 16 of
whom were killed by gunfire.
The number of ambush-style attacks listed does not include the countless incidents
where an officer was shot at but not struck by gunfire during an ambush-style attack.
