Seminar Descriptions Yoga Mindfullness As a first responder pain trauma is inevitable however the resistance to change is not If we as a profession continue to resist the need for change in how we train and respond to mental health issues we will continue to have a problem with suicide Mindfulness training specifically yoga has been scientifically proven to be an effective method for managing and mitigating the effects of stress Additionally yoga has been shown to Increase resilience Increase compassion Promote better decision making Increase focus Increase objectivity Increase flexibility strength and Improve performance at work and at home Mindfulness Yoga is not the answer to all the problems confronting today s law enforcement officers but it is certainly a viable option for mitigating the stress and trauma that they deal with on a daily basis Takeaways Understand the impact that stress can have on your mind body and spirit Have a better understanding of mindfulness and how it can improve your overall quality of life mentally physically and spiritually How yoga specifically can improve your performance at work and at home Have a better understanding of how yoga can help regulate the nervous system The role of yoga in proprioception interception and flow This seminar will consist of both classroom instruction and active yoga practice Some mats will be available but attendees are encouraged to bring their own Organized Walk Run Join other attendees on a mapped walk run course at your own pace Event will take place outdoors dress appropriately

Seminar Descriptions Surviving An Officer Involved Shooting In 2010 Officer Katie Lawson was shot multiple times in the line of duty She will share her experience of the incident the aftermath and her recovery highlighting the importance of remaining resilient Building a Successful Peer Support Program Peer support is an essential element of an agency s overall wellness program Research supports that peer support is the preferred method of intervention for law enforcement Though peer support programming and design may differ for small mid size and large agencies This seminar will cover the fundamentals of peer support design as well as associated clinical issues Recommendations regarding policy and procedures will be presented as will challenges key gaps and lessons learned A First Responder Marriage Throughout their careers as Texas Peace Officers Cathy Javier Bustos have experienced many critical incidents separately and together Specifically they speak about The Big Three of their shared critical incidents a co worker suicide attempt a line of duty death and an officer involved shooting These experiences shaped and reshaped their identities as individuals and a couple They learned the ability to adapt is vital for career and personal survival Cathy Javier believe adjusting to the new normal is important for First Responders Getting help in the early days after a critical incident is essential to start the mental healing The days of the macho shaking it off are in the past Choosing A Professional Mental Health Practitioner Tips and Pitfalls This course will outline the importance of proactively identifying culturally competent mental health professionals to support police employees Strategies for identifying these individuals are offered including a discussion of core competencies needed how these can be assessed and how the Fraternal Order of Police is using these to identify screen and distribute a list of culturally competent clinicians

Seminar Descriptions EMDR Getting Unstuck From Trauma Traumatic experiences memories and losses can get stuck neurologically EMDR is a therapeutic technique that can help unstick a stuck place and allow your brain to process the experience in a more manageable way This seminar will explain EMDR and help participants identify possible stuck places in their trauma or grief In addition we will discuss how to access EMDR resources Expert Panel Discussion Successful Peer Support Teams Representatives from well established and successful peer support teams will discuss how they formed and shaped teams how they have navigated work with both administration and clinicians and how they have maintained the quality of their programs There will be opportunities for Q A with the panelists Keynote Strengthening the Officer Wellness Culture 10 Life Saving Lessons Learn 10 life saving lessons for building a leading officer wellness culture based on work with more than 100 law enforcement organizations in the United States and Canada Policing ranks atop the list of the most stressful jobs and this workshop delves into actionable strategies for reinforcing officer wellness at all levels of the organization including the roles of leadership peer support rank and file associations spouses and families and retirees Topics include transformational leadership organizational culture change strengthening morale gaining buy in and special opportunities for strengthening officer wellness in 2021 Attendees are provided a solution focused roadmap for transforming police organizational cultures to strengthen support and champion officer wellness Expert Panel Discussion What Treatment Really Looks Like A panel of clinical therapists who work with police officer clients and their families will discuss their philosophies of practice explain how they came to choose our unique population to treat and share myths and facts about how therapy can lead to healthier officers

Seminar Descriptions Spiritual Wellness The Best Advice I Wish I Had Listened To This seminar deals with a piece of advice from a retired Major with the CMPD when he told us as graduating recruits You ll never survive thirty years of law enforcement without a belief in something greater than yourself Although we train our bodies we train our minds and we attempt to train our emotions what is most often forgotten is the toll that this calling takes on the spiritual nature of law enforcement officers This is an overview of the hard spiritual lesson Parker learned dealing with three of the hardest years in his law enforcement career Implementing Wellness Legislation and Building Strong Wellness Policies Does your agency have a wellness program or policy This seminar will give tips for implementing wellness policies and programs in your agency or bargaining contract Many states have passed legislation that makes PTSD presumptive for workmen s compensation for first responders Learn the strategies used to accomplish this important benefit for members Finally learn about legally protected speech for peer support and why it is key to gaining participation in peer support programs Responding to the Death of an Officer LODD and Suicide The unfortunate reality of a career in law enforcement is many agencies will either suffer a loss because of a line of duty death or a death by suicide or both In this session you will be provided with valuable information on navigating both losses from the moment the news is received to years after the loss The information will be presented by Concerns of Police Survivors C O P S and Survivors of Blue Suicide Foundation SBS Pilates Mat Pilates is a strengthening and lengthening form of exercise that focuses on your core muscles while also training your arms and legs These are Pilates based exercises that are done without use of the Pilates reformer Some sanitized mats will be available but participants are also encouraged to bring their own

Sherri Martin MA LPCA Sherri Martin serves as the National Director of Wellness Services for the Fraternal Order of Police A career police officer Sherri has extensive experience in crisis negotiation and intervention serving most of her law enforcement career as a patrol supervisor and lead crisis negotiator While a member of the Charleston Police Department in South Carolina where she served the bulk of her career she achieved the rank of Lieutenant and was responsible for the development of programs in the areas of officer wellness and crisis intervention within the community Sherri earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina and a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Counseling Psychology from the Citadel where she was chosen by faculty to receive the J Patrick Leverett Award presented to the most outstanding graduate student in the Psychology program MA LPCA Additionally Sherri has experience in clinical therapy having worked with clients suffering from PTSD and Clinical Depression during research conducted at Ralph H Johnston Veterans Affairs Hospital in South Carolina She is licensed as a Professional Counselor Associate in the State of Connecticut While pursuing a Postgraduate Certificate in Forensic Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice Sherri led the Fraternal Order of Police National Officer Wellness Committee in a landmark survey of police officers on the subjects of critical stress stigma and use of wellness services Sherri is a member of the National Consortium on Preventing Law Enforcement Suicide led by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and has served as a contributor on various symposia on officer wellness and police suicide She has been a member of the FOP since 1997 and has served in various positions of local and state lodge leadership since 2003

Christopher Davis After 25 years of service Chris recently retired as an Assistant Chief of Police from the Fayetteville NC Police Department In his last assignment he served as the Investigative Bureau Commander and supervised over 150 employees Chris has worked in patrol investigations internal affairs and the training division Prior to law enforcement he served 3 years as a U S Army officer and served in Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield In addition to his law enforcement career Chris has worked as an adjunct criminal justice professor at Methodist University Fayetteville State University and currently at North Carolina Central University He is a certified yoga instructor and has a passion for improving resilience and operational performance via yoga In May of 2019 Chris started Yoga911 to enhance the delivery of Yoga Mindfulness practices Chris has a master s degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and a bachelor s degree in criminal justice from the University of Dayton He is also a graduate of the 118th Session of the Officer s Administrative Course Southern Police Institute University of Louisville and the Senior Management Institute for Police Police Executive Research Forum Currently Chris works for North Carolina Central University as an Adjunct Professor and the Institute for Intergovernmental Research IIR as a contractor for the VALOR Program which focuses on police officer safety wellness and resilience

Cathy Javier Bustos Cathy and Javier have a combined 46 years of law enforcement experience Their mission is helping First Responders and their families learn how to communicate with each other to build a foundation of trust and understanding This foundation is important when life becomes stressful to include experiencing trauma and critical incidents together They serve as Peer Support Team members at the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Sam Houston State University in Huntsville TX for quarterly Post Critical Incident Seminars They volunteer at National Police Week in Washington DC as support services They are certified Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Instructors They write articles for law enforcement publications They appeared in the documentary Officer Involved In addition to telling their own personal story Cathy and Javier have specific topics they wish to stress upon the First Responder community Building Family Bonds Career Survival Dealing with Trauma Mindfulness Resiliency Stress Management Self Care Suicide Education Prevention Wellness Leadership in Times of Crisis Officer Involved Shootings

Thomas Coghlan PsyD Thomas Coghlan is a licensed Clinical Psychologist a retired NYPD Detective and a past Visiting Law Enforcement Fellow with the International Association of Chiefs of Police He operates a private practice in Great Neck NY where he exclusively treats police officers and their families and also conducts appeal evaluations for psychological disqualifications He is the New York Area Clinician for the Drug Enforcement Administration s Employee Assistance Program as well as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at John Jay College He conducts both psychological pre employment and fitness forduty evaluations for a variety of public safety agencies in New York and New Jersey Dr Coghlan received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Yeshiva University in 2010 his Master s Degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay CUNY in 2003 and his B A in Psychology from Queens College in 1993 He retired from the NYPD in 2018 after twenty one years of service From 2010 through 2018 Dr Coghlan was assigned with responsibilities as a Psychologist in the NYPD During that time he performed psychological fitness for duty evaluations pre employment psychological evaluations military deployment debriefings disciplinary stress triage debriefings and trauma response He served as liaison to the Department s peer support program He is licensed in the states of New York and New Jersey Dr Coghlan is credentialed with the National Register of Health Service Psychologists

Ingrid Coghlan RYT Ingrid Coghlan is a retired NYPD Police Officer and a Yoga instructor She is a Certified Yoga Instructor through the Yoga Alliance She is also certified in children s yoga through Little Flower Yoga and PiYo Yoga Pilates Fusion certified through Beach Body During her time with the NYPD she was assigned to Transit Districts 34 and 12 in Brooklyn and the Bronx respectively as well as Applicant Investigations She teaches vinyasa flow Yoga to new and experienced students at a number of sites in New York City where she guides students through meditation and pranayama techniques

Stephanie Conn PhD Dr Stephanie Conn is a former police officer as well as the daughter and wife of police officers and is a Licensed Psychologist at her practice First Responder Psychology in Portland Oregon specializing in police stress trauma work life balance coping and resilience She supports first responder agencies with CISM peer support and mental health training She began as a dispatcher call taker before becoming an officer and then earning her doctorate in Counseling Psychology She has presented widely to emergency responders sharing wisdom gained from her police experience her research and her therapy practice She is the author of Increasing Resilience in Police and Emergency Personnel MA LPCA

Kathy Thomas PhD Dr Kathy Thomas began working with public safety personnel in April 1995 in response to the Oklahoma City Bombing In addition she responded to both New York and Washington DC following the 9 11 Terrorist attacks She is the Contract Psychologist for the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety including the OK Highway Patrol She is the Clinical Director for the Warriors Rest Foundation a non profit that provides peer support training mentoring and response for law enforcement agencies and departments nationally She serves on the Advisory Board of the Oklahoma Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors Inc She has provided mental health and support services for the Concerns of Police Survivors Inc for over 22 years MA LPCAShe is a Level II trained EMDR therapist and a member of IACP International Association of Chiefs of Police She received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Oklahoma State University in 1988 and has maintained a private practice in Stillwater Oklahoma for the past 30 years

David Black PhD David Black Ph D is the Founder and CEO of Cordico the Chief Psychologist of the California Police Chiefs Association and serves on the National Fraternal Order of Police s Officer Wellness Committee and Provider Evaluation Subcommittee He is a founding Board Member of the National Sheriffs Association Psychological Services Group serves as their Chair of Technology and Social Media is an Advisory Board Member for the National Police Foundation s Center for Mass Violence Response Studies serves on the IACP Police Psychological Services Ethics Committee and serves on the Lexipol Board of Directors Dr Black has served law enforcement for over 18 years

Sean Harper Sean Harper is a retired sergeant with a police department in Colorado Sean has held the positions of second vice president for his local lodge contract negotiations team member legislative liaison for the state lodge and has been a voting delegate at the national level In Sean s role at his police department he founded a very successful peer support team which has been modeled to create other teams around the state Sean oversaw the peer support team for 13 years Within that time Sean has brought many suicide prevention wellness and PTSD awareness trainings to the police department Sean has been the front line for peer support on dozens of critical incidents over the years Sean continues to work collaboratively with the agencies administrators to create and promote a culture of wellness for all members of the police department In 2014 Sean was selected by the governor s office to co chair the Peace Officer PTSD Task Force This task force included police executives state and local executives and legislators The task force met many times over the course of six months researching PTSD suicide wellness and other officer mental health challenges At the conclusion of the task force Sean assisted in creating and ultimately approving the final report which was an extensive document submitted to the Colorado State Legislature Under Sean s direction the task force s efforts led to a significant change in the workers compensation law in Colorado Sean helped craft language in the state statute which makes it possible for peace officers to obtain the much needed workers compensation benefits when faced with the challenges of work related PTSD Since that time Sean has been at the helm of several pro law enforcement legislative efforts Sean was instrumental in creating a grant program through the legislature to fund officer wellness training and mental health care Sean wrote the language which governs the use of state funded dollars specifically for officer wellness Sean continues to be a resource to officers and agencies across the nation for both peer support and the implementation of wellness programs

David Kennington MA LPC MHSP David Kennington is a Licensed Professional Counselor employed by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department MNPD since 2007 He manages The Professional Wellness Section which was cited as a model officer wellness program in a 2019 Department of Justice Congressional Report The Professional Wellness Section has 2 Units Counseling and Wellness with multiple programs including training critical incident stress management psychotherapy peer support family support mentoring and chaplain support The Professional Wellness Section is comprised of both sworn and civilian employees He provides therapy to law enforcement personnel and their families is a certified officer wellness instructor and leads critical incident stress debriefings He has over 30 years of experience working as a clinical psychotherapist He recently served on Officer Safety and Wellness Panels at the Department of Justice He has a B A in Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin 1988 and a M A in Professional Counseling from The University of Texas at Tyler 1994 David has been married to Korree for 23 years They have 2 sons Collin 20 and Cooper 16

Shelley Jones Shelley Jones graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice and went on to work as a Missouri Probation and Parole Officer In 1993 she was hired as a patrol officer by the Columbia MO Police Department and 10 years later joined their new Motorcycle Unit She retired as an Assistant Chief after 21 years of service Ms Jones is the recipient of the Medal Valor and named Missouri Peace Officer of Year 1996 In 2014 upon retiring from law enforcement Ms Jones joined National Concerns of Police Survivors as the Director of Operations While at C O P S she learned that the leadership was concerned about the lack of services for the families of officers who die by suicide Ms Jones submitted a proposal to the National Board and in May 2020 with the blessing and support of C O P S left C O P S along with another staff member and together they started a new non profit organization Survivors of Blue Suicide Foundation Inc SBS SBS s mission is to foster hope by uniting survivors of law enforcement suicide to support one another and honor our fallen heroes Ms Jones is a surviving co worker of Columbia Police Officer Michael Goldberg who died by suicide in 2007 and Officer Molly Thomas Bowden who was killed in the line of duty in 2005

Dianne Bernhard Dianne Bernhard is the Executive Director of Concerns of Police Survivors C O P S a national non profit organization that supports the families and co workers of our nation s fallen law enforcement officers Founded on the concept of peer support C O P S and its 55 chapters across the nation provide services to over 55 000 members C O P S service include responding to assist agencies and families directly following a line of duty death training law enforcement on how to respond to trauma and tragedy providing counselling services and scholarships to surviving children and spouses organizing the survivor experience at National Police Week and providing survivor grief retreats Prior to assuming her role at C O P S Ms Bernhard retired from the Columbia Missouri Police Department after 23 years of service as their Deputy Chief of Police the first female in that agency to hold that position She started as a patrol officer and worked her ways up through the ranks spending time in positions in the Patrol Division Investigative Division the Community Action Team the Mounted Team and in the schools before moving into administration She completed her undergraduate work at Truman State University with a Bachelor s Degree in Justice Systems and her post graduate work at the University of Missouri where she received her Master s Degree in Public Administration Ms Bernhard learned about C O P S through the death of a co worker and friend Officer Molly Thomas Bowden who was shot and killed in 2005 She saw how C O P S was able to step in and assist Molly s family and as her retirement approached Ms Bernhard saw an opportunity to give back to the organization that has come to mean so much to Molly s family In her position at C O P S Ms Bernhard has had the opportunity to serve on several national committees has provided testimony to the Department of Justice to two Presidential Commissions and has presented training at the nearly every major law enforcement association conference As the Chair of the National Police Week Planning Committee Ms Bernhard works to ensure the various organizations responsible for hosting National Police Week collaborate effectively as they host this reverent week honoring our nation s fallen heroes Ms Bernhard is especially proud to serve as a voice of survivors on the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund Board especially on the important decisions governing the sacred Law Enforcement Memorial where our nation s heroes are forever memorialized

Sgt Katie Lawson Sgt Katie Lawson joined the Oklahoma City Police Department in 2006 She is a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Arts Criminal Justice Since her employment with the police department she has worked in various units such as Patrol Vice Crimes Against Children Metal Theft Peer Support IMPACT and did a short stint with the Oklahoma City DEA Office Sgt Lawson is currently assigned to the department s Wellness Unit Sgt Lawson is also a member of her department s Negotiator Team and Honor Guard

Stephen Parker Stephen Parker started at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department CMPD in 1996 working as a patrol officer In 2004 Parker joined the CMPD Metro Division Street Crimes Unit as a gang officer This unit was designed to combat gang drugs and violent crime in the Metro Division In 2007 Parker was assigned to the CMPD gang unit and was reassigned to the position he holds today Parker currently serves on the FBI Safe Streets Task Force working gang and organized crime cases that involve racketeering narcotics trafficking murder and violent crime In 2016 Parker was awarded the FBI s National Safe Streets Task Force Officer of the Year award In 2017 Parker was awarded the CMPD Detective of the Year award In 2018 Parker was qualified in federal court of Eastern District of Virginia as an expert in the United Blood Nation and the Nine Trey Gangsters Parker also teaches Criminal Investigations for recruit training at the CMPD training academy and has also taught law enforcement training at the federal state local and collegiate levels Parker has taught Task Force Officer On Boarding for the FBI in North Carolina New Jersey Alabama Florida California and Alaska Parker has also taught classes at Bob Jones University in areas of criminal justice psychology and a youth ministries block dealing with Gang Identification and Fundamentals of Youth Violence and Delinquent Behavior For the past fourteen years Parker served as Sergeant at Arms for the North Carolina Gang Investigators Association For fourteen years

Nick Daugherty Nick Daugherty began his career with the Grand Prairie Police Department GPPD in 2003 where he worked as a patrol officer and a school resource officer and he also served on a task force for underage alcohol and drug use In 2012 he promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he spent 2 years in patrol while also serving as a Field Training Sergeant and Fleet Coordinator Nick then served as the Sergeant for the Criminal Intelligence Unit for 2 years before he semi retired in August 2017 He continues to serve as reserve officer for GPPD At a young age Nick did a lot of irresponsible things with money consistently partaking in stupid tax the art of buying toys he couldn t afford using credit cards Before he knew it he had accumulated over 80 000 in consumer debt most of which was wrapped up in cars car stereo equipment and just plain ole stuff He was tired tired of being in debt and tired from working so much overtime to keep afloat Nick realized that he needed to educate himself on personal finances and work to get out of the hole he had dug for himself He was introduced to the Dave Ramsey program and became an avid listener supporter and believer in the Total Money Make Over program He sold a bunch of that plain ole stuff and worked over a thousand hours of overtime to get out of debt which he achieved in 2003 and has been consumer debt free ever since A graduate and coordinator of Dave Ramsey s Financial Peace University Nick is also a certified Ramsey Solution Master Financial Coach and has coached hundreds of first responder families through almost every type of financial crisis and scenario possible He also works with several national first responder nonprofit organizations focusing on financial wellness for those suffering from PTSD and suicidal thoughts In 2011 Nick was approached by Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye to create and instruct a revolutionary and progressive training block on financial wellness Building Financial Strength in First Responder Families to all incoming recruits This program was later expanded into mandatory training for the entire GPPD force The class has now been taught to first responders from over 2 000 agencies police academies national conferences and police leadership organizations from across the country Nick is the owner of Serve Protect Financial Texas and is licensed as an Investment Advisor Representative CRD 6697256 in Texas Virginia and the US Virgin Islands He additionally holds a Texas Health and Life Insurance license and has completed classes through Ken Zahn s Certified Financial Planning professional education program while working towards becoming a Certified Financial Planner Nick has the heart of a teacher and a passion for educating first responders and their families on how to strengthen their financial wellness and plan for the future His vision is to have a nation full of first responders with the ability to comfortably retire when they want to
